The founding of the Austrian School of Budapest

The Austrian School Budapest was founded within the framework of a cultural agreement signed in 1989 between the Republic of Austria and the then Hungarian People’s Republic in order to promote and deepen cultural relations between the two countries.

At the request of the Hungarian side, the Austrian Realgymnasium was chosen as the type of school, with Hungarian language and literature as well as Hungarian history included in the curriculum. At the end of their education, students receive an Austrian school-leaving certificate, which is recognized in Hungary without nostrification.

Founding ministries:

  • the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Public Education (successor: Ministry of the Interior) and
  • the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Sport (successor: Federal Ministry of Education)

The bodies of the foundation:

  • the Board of Trustees,
  • the managing director,
  • the Supervisory Board.

The Austrian Ministry of Education is responsible for supervising the management and educational support of the Austrian School in Budapest.
